The manufacturing of glass is a very interesting process. Sand, limestone, soda ash are mixed together along with titanium or aluminium. Glass is mainly 70- 75% sand; soda is added to the mixture to lower the melting point of the sand which is around 1400 degree Celsius. Lime is added to stabilize the mixture whereas to impart more durability to the glass product, titanium or aluminium is added. If the glass product is supposed to be of a certain colour, then the chemical is added at this point in the mixture.
The entire mixture is heated and melted at 3180 degrees Fahrenheit for 24 hours. After 24 hours, the mixture forms a slurry which is sticky in nature. This mixture is molten glass which is called ‘gob’. The gobs are then used to make the solid glass.

There are basically two methods which are used to manufacture the glass product. The glass blow method and the press and blow method. The glass blow method is the traditional method and has been used since the mid-1800s. in this method, the gobs are transferred to the mould also called Parisons. A blast of air is pushed down the mould or the parison which helps in forming the neck of the jar. Another blast of air is followed soon after which helps the sticky gob move towards the walls of the mould. The glass piece that is formed now is transferred to another mould where it is reheated to give the final shape. Compressed air and vacuum are used in the final step of glassmaking in this method.

The second method that is widely used is the press and blow method. Most industries now employ this method instead of the traditional glass blow method. In this method, the gob is transferred to the mould with the help of a plunger which helps in giving the shape to the glass. The glass product that is formed is transferred to the finishing mould with the help of the mechanical arm. Blowing is done at this point to give the product the desired shape. The finished product is then taken out with the help of tongs and placed on the cooling plate. The entire process takes not more than a few seconds and for this reason, the final product that comes out is at a very high temperature.

The glass product then goes through the process of annealing to make sure that the glass product does not have any air bubble within or any impurity. Lehr, which is a long furnace, helps in cooling the glass at various temperatures. The temperature is controlled so that the glass product does not go from a very high to very low temperature and vice- versa. Before the glass product enters the Lehr, a coating is applied to it, to make sure that it is free from any scratches. The same coating is applied when the product comes out from Lehr. The glass product can take anywhere from 30 minutes to cool down and two hours.
